La Jolla Playhouse Adaptation of ‘The Outsiders’ Wins Tony Award

An adaptation of the classic novel “The Outsiders” born at the La Jolla Playhouse has gone on to win a Tony Award for best musical.

The gritty musical adaptation of the S. E. Hinton book officially won the Tony Award for Best New Musical on Sunday night. It also won in three other categories: Best Direction of a Musical, Best Lighting Design of a Musical, and Best Sound Design of a Musical.

Christopher Ashley, Artistic Director at the La Jolla Playhouse, said it was an “absolute thrill to see ‘The Outsiders’ honored with four Tony Awards.”

“We send our heartfelt congratulations to Tony-winning director Danya Taymor, along with the entire cast and creative team,” Ashley said in a statement to the San Diego Union-Tribune. “This deeply moving and visceral new piece took its first steps here at La Jolla Playhouse during our 2022-23 season, and we are incredibly proud to see that work go on to receive such wonderful recognition on Broadway.”

“The Outsiders” is a musical adaptation of the classic coming-of-age novel about rival gangs and their fight for survival and purpose in 1960s Oklahoma. It held its world-premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse last year.

The Broadway musical was nominated for a total of 12 Tony Awards, and was also performed during the ceremony over the weekend.
