Local La Jolla Surf Camp Making Riding Waves Available to All

A local La Jolla surf camp is teaming up with the Autism Society of San Diego to make surfing more accessible to all this summer.

The La Jolla Shores Surf Camp is kicking off its Surf Education Academy program this week. Thanks to a new partnership with the Autism Society, the organization is now doubling the number of weeks it’s hosting the camp.

“There’s not many places that you feel safe as a special needs parent, and this program it makes you feel safe,” parent Crystal Vallejo told FOX 5 San Diego. “I feel like I don’t have to say, ‘Oh I’m sorry every five minutes.’”

The camps take place at La Jolla Shores. They start promptly at 9 a.m. each day they’re held, and run until 2 p.m. A full list of La Jolla Surf Camp dates in partnership with the Autism Society is available below.

  • Week One: July 8 – July 11
  • Week Two: July 15 – July 18
  • Week Three: July 22 – July 25
  • Week Four: July 29 – August 1
  • Week Five: August 5 – August 8

Along with the practical skills of learning how to surf, the camps also teach important life skills. The curriculum is modeled after martial arts practices, and offers tips on character development and how to be safe and independent in the ocean.

You can also rest assured that your children are getting top-quality education, since all La Jolla Surf Camp instructors are certified in water safety, advanced first aid, and CPR. They’re also trained in International Surfing Association best practices.
