Check Out the ‘Science of Surfing’ at SDSU

If you’ve ever wanted to learn about the science of surfing in San Diego, then you have your chance at San Diego State University.

There is currently a Science of Surfing exhibit put together in partnership with the California Surf Museum in Oceanside (which is one of the best things to do in North County, by the way).

According to SDSU’s Library, the exhibit highlights a wide range of surfing-related science and culture, including:

  • Wave energy
  • Tides and tidal patterns
  • Types of surf breaks
  • Common surfing conditions
  • Ocean stewardship
  • Surfboard design and engienering

Throughout the Science of Surfing exhibit, you’ll also find a number of incredible photographs, works of art, videos, diagrams, charts, and more.

According to SDSU, the traveling exhibit “blends scientific inquiry with the popular sport of surfing, encouraging students and other visitors to explore the connection between education and sport, between science and recreation.”

The exhibit is even being used by students who are part of the Surf and Skate Collaborative and the Center for Surfing Research at SDSU. However, it’s worth a visit for anyone interested in surfing in San Diego.

“While modern science is forever looking for explanations of what goes on in the natural world, modern-day surfers have been at the ready to apply this knowledge where they can in advancing in the art of riding waves,” said California Surfing Museum President Jim Kempton.

The exhibit runs from now through the start of winter break, which is Christmas Eve, Dec. 24. It’s located in the University Library at the end of Donor Hall, and is available during regular SDSU Library Hours — 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily.
