Take a Trip to the Past at this 90s Speakeasy in San Diego

If you’ve ever wanted to relive the pre-Y2K era, you’ll get the chance at a 90s speakeasy in San Diego called Back 2 The Video Store.

Many speakeasies in San Diego, including the stylish Gaslamplighter in downtown, are modeled after the 1920s and 1930s. That makes sense, given that speakeasies originated during Prohibition. However, a new 90s speakeasy in San Diego takes a different approach.

Back 2 The Video Store is an immersive experience packed to the brim with 1990s nostalgia. The entire bar mimics a Blockbuster video store, complete with pop culture references and VHS tapes. Era-appropriate decor includes lava lamps and Pog-playing stations.

  • Jumanji: A drink made with tequila, prickly pear, Ancho Reyes, Squirt, and Lime
  • Men In Black: Ube, Rum, Montenegro, Pineapple, Lime, and Coconut
  • Toy Story: Cucumber Mint Vodka, Watermelon Syrup, Lime, Mint, and Glitter
  • Big Lebrowski: Peanut Butter Whiskey, Licor 43 Horchata, Faretti Biscotti, Montenegro, Aztec Chocolate Bitters

There’s also a light food menu that calls back to movie nights after checking out your favorite flix from the video store, including Personal Pan Pepperoni Pizza, Brown Butter Popcorn, Nachos, and candy.

General admission to the 1990s speakeasy in San Diego costs $22 per person, and includes a “Jumanji” or “Men In Black” welcome drink.

The Back 2 The Video Store speakeasy is open Thursday, Fridays, and Saturdays in a pop-up format until Oct. 19. It’s located at the Parq Nightclub at 615 Broadway in the Gaslamp Quarter.

Reservations for the 1990s San Diego speakeasy can be made on the bar’s website.
