Explore Indigenous Coastal Surf Culture in La Jolla

Don’t miss an opportunity to explore your relationship to the sea and celebrate Indigenous coastal surf culture right in La Jolla.

On Sunday, June 29, local nonprofit Native Like Water will host UNITY – Indigenous Coastal Surf Culture, an event that will let participants learn from the original stewards of the sea and celebrate the rich traditions of the Indigenous people who have long called the ocean their home.

The event will kick off with a welcome at 1:30 p.m. at La Jolla Shores Tower 30. From 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., there will be surf demonstrations, hands-on ocean activities, and rich storytelling.

The actual surf activity will include water safety instructions, the history of local Indigenous culture, and a team-building “Supsquatch” surf outing in the waters off one of La Jolla’s most beautiful beaches. It’s a mix of deep history and our favorite San Diego our activities.

Native Like Water, the organizers of the event, recommend that participants arrive at the event wearing swimming outfits. Additionally, they say to bring a towel, change of clothes, and a refillable water bottle. There will be wetsuits and life-vests for those who need them, and the organizers will also provide water filling stations and fruit as light refreshments.

The UNITY – Indigenous Coastal Surf Culture is free to attend, though you should RSVP in advance. Liability waivers will need to be filled out before participating in the surf activities as well.
