Do you love comedy? Are you a regular at The Comedy Store in La Jolla? And do you also love tacos?
If so, you’re going to love this news: Comedian George Lopez is getting into the food game as he partners with ‘virtual restaurant’ company Nextbite to open Taqueria in San Diego and other cities nationwide.
On June 8, 2021, the first of hopefully many ghost-kitchen or virtual restaurant taco-eateries, spearheaded by Lopez, will open in San Diego.
George Lopez Tacos will partner with existing brick-and-mortar restaurants in the area, where the menu will be available. After hungry patrons order their meals from the restaurant’s kitchen, the taqueria will use Uber Eats, DoorDash, Postmates, and Grubhub to deliver the food.
According to Eater, San Diego, the George Lopez Tacos will offer “street tacos,” carnitas, chicken tinga, and beef Ranchero Verde. Of course, chips and specialty salsa will also be available, along with and churro bites and other Taqueria favorites.
Additionally, many of the recipes will be original, created by George Lopez himself, and thus are unique to this virtual restaurant chain.
Although, George Lopez Tacos isn’t the first virtual restaurant or Ghost Kitchen to materialize in San Diego in response to the pandemic.
In October 2020, Nextbite partnered with Grammy-nominated rapper Wiz Khalifa to create a virtual burger and wings restaurant called Hot Box by Wiz. This ghost kitchen started in San Diego, CA, but in a short time has reached across the US to Philadelphia, PA, and New York City, NY.
Due to the growing use of personalized delivery systems and a continuing need for social distancing, the idea for virtual restaurants will likely grow over the next few years.
