International Yoga Day: Celebrate Summer & Wellness in San Diego

If you’re a committed yogi who wants to kick off the summer season with a healthy dose of wellness, don’t miss this International Yoga Day celebration in San Diego.

This year, the summer solstice — the official start of the summer season — takes place on Saturday, June 21. It just also happens to International Yoga Day, which is a global celebration of the ancient wellness modality. More than that, it’s yoga tradition to practice 108 sun salutations on special occasions or the changing of the seasons, such as the seasonal solstices and equinoxes.

To mark the occasion, San Diego yoga studio YogaSix Bay Park is ringing in the summer season with its own beachside yoga celebration.

On International Day of Yoga, the yoga studio is hosting a rejuvenation outdoor wellness place at Playa Pacifica Park in Mission Bay. The event is completely free and open to the public, and is a great way to kick off the summer season.

YogaSix instructor Reva will be guiding participants through 108 sun salutations, a sequence of repeating poses in yoga that ends up becoming a moving meditation. According to the organizers, the sequence will help you “ignite your inner fire and embrace the energy of the season.”

Along with the physical movement, there will also be a live DJ providing groovy jams as participants get out of their heads and into their bodies. You won’t need anything special for the practice — just your mat, a water bottle, and an open heart.

If you need another reason to celebrate International Yoga Day in San Diego, there’s also this: a federal court recently overturned the city’s ban on free outdoor yoga, meaning beach yoga has returned to America’s Finest City.
