Is There a San Diego Fire Today? Here’s What to Know
Reports of smoke and ash throughout the county have led local residents to ask if there’s a San Diego fire today. Here’s what you should know.
As of the writing of this article, there does not appear to be a major fire burning in San Diego County. That’s despite record-breaking heat earlier in September felt over the weekend across Southern California.
However, there have been reports of smoke and ash in San Diego area, particularly in North San Diego County, according to local officials from CalFire. Reportedly, that’s because of three major fires burning in Southern California.

A significant amount of drift smoke is in the air from the fires to our North. This morning, we received reports of ash on vehicles in North County and surrounding communities. There is currently no threat to San Diego County from these fires.
The Line Fire, for example, has burned 26,516 acres in a mountainous region of the San Bernardino National Forest. It’s currently 5% contained. The Bridge Fire in the Angeles National Forest has burned 3,786 acres as of writing.
The closest fire to San Diego today is the Airport Fire, which is located at the entrance to Trabuco Canyon in eastern Orange County. So far, it has burned 9,333 acres and is zero percent contained.
According to the Los Angeles Times, smoke from the massive wildfires have spread throughout Southern California, and make it look like “a nuclear warhead had been set off.” CalFire notes that “there is currently no threat to San Diego County from these fires,” however.
One piece of good news for firefighters and Southern California residents: there aren’t currently any major Santa Ana winds that could cause the fires to spread even faster. And, although the entire region was baked by a heatwave over the weekend, a cooling trend is expected as the week progresses.
There is technically a smaller 1,000-acre fire in San Diego County, though it is burning in Camp Pendleton. According to the Marine Corps, it poses no risk to personnel or structures.
