Apply Now for the 2022 La Jolla Jewel Awards
The Jewel Awards are facilitated by the La Jolla Historical Society, encouraging home and business owners to restore historical buildings and homes rather than replace them.
So much La Jolla history can be replaced by updates when that is not always necessary. So, the historical society created these awards to remedy unnecessary change. According to the historical society, the purpose of the awards is to maintain the “rich character and charm of La Jolla.”
The Jewel Awards get broken into two categories:
- The Restoration Award: The Restoration Award winner keeps the form, features, and character of a property reminiscent of a particular period. The stipulations for this award include the continued meticulous maintenance of this scene. Nothing can get added before or after the historical period for a property to be worthy of this award. Neither modern conveniences nor stylish decor unfamiliar to the time is allowed in the pursuit of this winner.
- The Rehabilitation Award: The Rehabilitation Award winner can find a practical purpose for a property while still maintaining aspects of its original purpose. Eligibility is contingent on reserving the basic historical, cultural, or architectural character of a property. However, modernization, especially where it is necessary to keep the property operational, is encouraged. People who can combine the past with present needs are perfect candidates for this award.
