Local Group Fundraising for Outdoor Dining, Pedestrian Promenade in La Jolla Shores

Want to help support an al fresco dining promenade in La Jolla Shores? A local business association is fundraising to do just that.

For those unfamiliar, the La Jolla Shores Business Association is spearheading the effort to create a permanent pedestrian promenade and outdoor dining space on Avenida de la Playa.

The section of Avenida de la Playa has been closed for nearly six years, and after multiple temporary extensions, the LJSBA successfully secured a permit from the City of San Diego to make the closure permanent.

While the closure is now permanent, the Association is now raising funds to make the area a much more established fixture for pedestrians and outdoor dining in La Jolla Shores.

According to LJSBA, plans for the single-block car-free zone include structural upgrades like permanent bollards, uniform signage, and decorative resurfacing to formally transition the corridor into a vibrant plaza.

In order to protect public beach access and to comply with regulations requiring the project to replace the 11 displaced parking spaces, advocates are currently planning a new sidewalk and parallel parking spots along Camino del Oro.

While the vision for the revamped business district is clear, community organizers are actively seeking additional funding and grants to cover the remaining construction and infrastructure costs.

In an effort to minimize disruption to local businesses, the project hopes to complete fundraising and finalize designs ahead of breaking ground.
