Urban Surf for Kids to Host 2 Surf Therapy Camps for At-Risk Youth in La Jolla Shores
La Jolla Shores is getting ready to share some serious coastal stoke this month with two surf therapy camps hosted by Urban Surf 4 Kids
Scheduled for back-to-back Saturdays in October, the surf therapy camps will bring empowerment, community, mentorship, and even career opportunities to the kids in our community who need it most. That includes children in the foster system, adoptive youth, and other at-risk kids.
The first of the two is the Teen Career Fair & Surf Therapy Camp, scheduled for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17 at La Jolla Shores Park. Tailored for youth ages 13 to 18, it will pair one-on-one surfing sessions with an on-site career fair.
The following weekend, there will be a standard surf therapy camp for youth ages 3 to 18. Also scheduled for 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 24, the camp will feature water safety instruction, therapeutic surfing, and environmental stewardship — including a Leave no Trace beach cleanup to close out the day.
Both camps rely heavily on community support to maintain a safe ratio of kids to in-water volunteers. Because of that, organizers are currently seeking local volunteers to help with setup, registration, and in-water surfing mentorship, as well as non-surfing participants for land activities.
