Yoga on the Cliffs: Celebrate the Return of Free Beach Yoga in San Diego

One of the best ways to celebrate the return of free yoga in San Diego beaches and parks is to take a class yourself. Luckily, an opportunity to practice Yoga on the Cliffs is coming up.

For context, a cornerstone of San Diego wellness culture is the availability of free yoga classes, often held on public beaches or parks. However, free public yoga classes were temporarily banned in the city.

Back in June, however, an appeals court overturned the ban on public yoga, calling it unconstitutional. As a result, free public beach yoga classes — including Yoga on the Cliffs — were able to return to the city.

Speaking of which, Yoga on the Cliffs is a longstanding San Diego tradition in the hip neighborhood of OB, or Ocean Beach. It takes place on a beautiful cliff side overlooking the ocean, and is scheduled each Saturday at 10:30 a.m. throughout the summer.

Yoga on the Cliffs was started way back in 2009 by local yoga teacher Jennifer Diamond. It’s a gentle, Hatha-based flow that’s sure to help you balance and strengthen your mind, body, and spirit.

You don’t need any prior yoga experience or a fancy gym membership to attend the yoga class. The classes are designed by Diamond to be completely beginner-friendly and accessible to a wide range of people.

The class is free to attend, but there’s a suggested donation of $10 to $25 to help support Diamond and her yoga teaching. You won’t need anything fancy to take the class, just your body, a yoga mat, a beach towel for placing under your mat, and a can-do attitude.

Yoga on the Cliffs takes place at Osprey Point in OB. It’s sometimes referred to as the 2nd parking lot south of Point Loma Ave, or “The Wedding Spot.” There will be purple cones indicating where the class is taking place.
