Little Groms Surf Camp Brings the Joy of the Ocean to Kids

Surfing is woven into the fabric of San Diego culture, and a local business called Little Groms Surf Camp is helping to foster the next generation of local surfers.
Little Groms Surf Camp, which runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend, is a popular San Diego surf camp that helps children living in San Diego learn essential ocean skills while having a blast in the waves.
During the five-day camp, young surfers learn essential surfing techniques, ocean safety, and how to spot and identify potential ocean hazards, such as rip currents. There are two camps to choose from: Little Groms is aimed at young surfers aged 5 to 8, while Big Groms caters to kids ages 9 to 15.
Best of all, each lesson is tailored to a young surfer’s individual comfort level. Students move at their own pace, slowly building confidence in the waves.
Little Groms Surf Camp takes place at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. It’s not only one of the best beaches in Encinitas, but it’s particularly well-suited for beginner surfers because of its accessibility and generally mild waves.
There are different options available to suit different schedules, too. Morning summer surf camps are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. noon each day, while afternoon surf camps are from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The camps happen Monday through Friday during the summers.
Little Groms Surf Camp costs $450 to attend, with surfboards and boogie boards provided. All young surfers should bring their own wetsuit, snack, water, and beach towel each day.
