Traveling To or From San Diego? Expect Crowds at The Airport

San Diego is a top travel destination for people across the world. If you’re planning on flying out or into San Diego airport this summer, here’s what you need to know.

According to the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, San Diego International Airport is expecting the busiest summer travel season in five years. As such, local officials are urging travelers — whether they’re arriving or departing — to plan ahead.

“We are about one month into the summer holiday travel season and already we are seeing some of the highest numbers since the pandemic,” said Kimberly Becker and CEO of the Regional Airport Authority.

Travel for the Independence Day holiday on July 4, for example, is expected to be particularly busy. The Airport Authority expects 4th of July travel to begin on Friday, June 28 and end on Sunday, July 7.

The busiest day for the holiday travel in San Diego is expected to be Sunday, July 7, which means that you may want to leave a bit earlier or later. (However, if you do get stuck at the airport, there are plenty of delicious local eats to be had there.)

To help get you through the airport as quickly as possible and get to your San Diego vacation, the Airport Authority recommends you:

  • Check on your flight’s status before arriving
  • Arrive early for flights
  • Avoid the busiest curbside times, which are 4 a.m. to 6:15 a.m., 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. to midnight
  • Make parking reservations ahead of time, and leverage free shuttles
  • Get dropped off via ride-share, friend, or family member to avoid parking accommodations
