La Jolla Tuberculosis Warning: What to Know

San Diego County health officials are warning of potential La Jolla tuberculosis exposure this year. Here’s what you should know.

On Tuesday, San Diego County health officials issued a warning alerting visitors to Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church in downtown La Jolla that they might have been exposed to tuberculosis.

The exposure warning covers a time period between Feb. 17, 2024 and Sept. 16, 2024. According to the county, the exposures would have primarily occurred during the church’s services, which take place at 8 a.m. Mondays through Fridays, at 9 a.m. on Saturdays, and at 7:30 a.m. on Sundays.

In other words, this means that the exposures likely didn’t happen in La Jolla schools associated with the church.

This is the second time in a week that health officials warned of potential La Jolla tuberculosis exposures. On Sept. 26, officials also warned about similar potential exposures at a nursing home dubbed The Cove at La Jolla. This warning also covered a similar date range between February and September.

Worryingly, experts say that this particular strain of tuberculosis may be drug resistant, which means that treatments may not be as effective, according to the San Diego County News Center.

Symptoms of tuberculosis can include fever, cough, and unexplained weight loss. The County of San Diego is urging anyone who thinks they may have been exposed to contact the region’s Tuberculosis Control Program at 619-692-8621.
