How San Diego Local Beth Hutchinson Turned a Crisis Into a New Model of Care
From doctors and therapists to trust attorneys and fiduciaries, a complex machine of care kicks into action when a medical crisis hits. Navigating the required appointments, paperwork, and decision-making while managing life, however, can leave people feeling alone and overwhelmed.
That’s where Healthy Enabler comes in. Based in Solana Beach and serving families across the country, Healthy Enabler provides private and comprehensive concierge care management, behavioral coaching, and family advocacy.
Here’s what you should know.
Born From Personal Crisis
Beth Hutchinson didn’t start her career knowing that she’d eventually run a boutique healthcare advocacy firm. Instead, the inspiration for Healthy Enabler was forged through unexpected personal adversity.
Thirteen years ago, Hutchinson was seven months pregnant with her first child when she received a life-changing piece of news: her 35-year-old, active, and healthy husband was diagnosed with aggressive stage IV leukemia.
“I was on the second floor at Scripps La Jolla giving birth to our daughter, and he was on the seventh floor getting chemotherapy,” Hutchinson said. “He was unhooked long enough to come down holding his IV pole to watch the delivery, and then went right back up.”
Her experience navigating the intimidating, and occasionally terrifying, medical maze changed her life. Over the next years, she became a fierce advocate for her husband and learned first-hand what it takes for a loved one’s dignity and care.
So, she decided to use her experience to help others going through similar circumstances.
Boots On the Ground
Hutchinson says her experience revealed a natural knack for navigating crises. Soon after, Beth met local Del Mar psychiatrist Dr. Robert Neborsky, who recognized her intuitive talent for patient advocacy and encouraged her to collaborate with him on complex cases.
One of her first clients, a former geologist suffering from severe bipolar depression, underscored the need for “boots on the ground” intervention in crisis cases.
When Beth arrived at her home, she found the woman lying in bed in a severe hoarding environment, unable to care for herself. Her utilities had been shut off, and dormant bank accounts were on the verge of being surrendered to state probate because officials assumed she had passed away.
In order to help the client, Beth organized a full suite of care. She reactivated dormant bank accounts, hired an attorney, coordinated a home cleanout with a company specialized in hoarding, and transferred the client to an assisted living community.
For years, Hutchinson even served as the woman’s healthcare power of attorney, and stayed by her side. She was still there, by the woman’s side, when she passed away peacefully years later.
The client was just one example of how Healthy Enabler takes a thoroughly hands-on approach.
“Healthcare treats the diagnosis,” Hutchinson said. “Healthy Enabler helps people navigate the life that surrounds it.”
Around-the-Clock Support
Unlike traditional case management agencies, Healthy Enabler operates on a true 24/7 concierge model. From midnight emergency room visits to helping young adults work through “failure-to-launch” anxiety, Hutchinson and her team remain committed to meeting people where they are.
As demand for this personal and comprehensive touch grew, Hutchinson added new team members, including certified case managers and directors in San Diego and Denver, Colorado.
Healthy Enabler even offers international programs, with highly coordinated medical travel, accommodations, and treatment navigation for international patients seeking specialized care in the U.S.
Hutchinson emphasizes that her definition of a success isn’t how long someone remains a client of Healthy Enabler. Instead, she says she measures by whether a client has been provided the tools, support, and coordination to move forward with their lives.
“Our goal isn’t dependence. It’s stability,” Hutchinson said. “If we can give someone their life back, we’ve done our job.”
A Continuing Legacy of Care
At its core, the name “Healthy Enabler” is an intentional play on words. While enabling often carries a negative connotation in behavioral health, Hutchinson and her team have reclaimed it to mean enabling health, independence, and peace of mind.
Of course, Hutchinson notes that Healthy Enabler is able to operate outside of the confines of the insurance industry, meaning that her team can bypass red tape and claim friction. This, however, means that Healthy Enabler’s services might be out of reach for some families navigating crises.
To that end, Healthy Enabler officially launched The Gail Hanna Legacy Foundation, a nonprofit foundation that provides professional care management and advocacy services to individuals and families in the community who otherwise could not afford them.
The foundation, established through a generous donation from a benefactor, is just another example of how Hutchinson and her team remain dedicated to providing care and compassion to folks who might be navigating the most difficult chapter of their lives.
“Doctors save lives,” Hutchinson said. “We help people live them.”
