How Much Are You Paying for Homeowners Insurance in San Diego?

How much you pay for homeowners insurance in San Diego largely depends on where you live. Here’s what the data says.

A new report from the San Francisco Chronicle analyzed homeowner insurance rates across the state of California. The data set is based on Zillow ZIP code data and information from the California Department of Insurance, and it shows that there’s a wide range for those in San Diego County.

For example, people living in the 92037 ZIP code, which includes downtown La Jolla, pay an average annual insurance premium of $3,560. That number is based on the average of 5,445 policies.

By contrast, people living in the hip bohemian neighborhood of Ocean Beach and surrounding communities pay an average of $1,767 in annual homeowners insurance premiums.

Insurance rates vary between specific San Diego neighborhoods, but they can also vary widely among independent cities in San Diego County. For example, those living in Encinitas pay an average of $2,546, while those in National City pay an average of $1,258 per year.

According to the Chronicle, a lot of the difference comes down to property values. However, other factors can play a role in determining how much your homeowners insurance in San Diego is annually. For example, owning specific dog breeds can also cause your insurance premiums to skyrocket.

It’s worth noting that the data doesn’t include insurance costs for condos or for homes covered by the California FAIR Plan.
