Le Coq La Jolla: Inside the New Modern French Steakhouse
A new modern French steakhouse headed by an award-winning chef is coming to La Jolla. Enter Le Coq, which is opening soon.
Le Coq La Jolla will be located at 7837 Herschel Ave, the former site of Herringbone. The steakhouse will serve a modern twist on classic French cuisine. As far as who will spearhead that twist, the restaurant has officially tapped Tara Monsod to be its executive chef, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Monsod is a veteran of the restaurant industry, a James Beard finalist for Best Chef in California in 2024. She previously served as the executive chef of the Michelin-recommended Animae restaurant.
Details are currently scarce, but Le Coq La Jolla is said to be planning both classic and modernized takes on French cuisine using California ingredients. Monsod, a Filipino American chef, will also be bringing a personal touch to the menu.
The project is the brainchild of hospitality group Puffer Malarkey Collective, which is known for projects like Herb & Wood and Animae.
As far as what happened to Herringbone, Puffer Malarkey Collective reacquired the restaurant after selling it to Tao Group in 2014. It’s a full circle moment for executive chef Monsod, who first started her career nearly a decade ago at Herringbone.
It’s not currently clear when Le Coq La Jolla will open to the public, but the restaurant group is planning a late spring or early summer 2024 date.
