SDSU Aztecs Name New Head Coach for Football Team
San Diego State University has named innovative and veteran coach Sean Lewis as its new SDSU Aztecs head coach.
Sean Lewis is now the nineteenth head coach of SDSU Aztecs, the team announced in a press release on Wednesday. Lewis received a five-year contract with the San Diego football team.
“San Diego State University, my family and I can’t express how excited we are to be joining this incredible community,” Lewis said in a statement to media. “We are looking forward to partnering with all of you in serving and leading our amazing football program.”
Lewis replaces previous head coach Brady Hoke, who announced his retirement earlier in November.
In a press release, the SDSU Aztecs called Lewis one of the most “innovative minds in college football over the past decade.” He brings an extensive resume to San Diego, including stints as head coach of Kent State University from 2018 to 2022 and as assistant coach of Syracuse, Bowling Green, and Eastern Illinois.
Most recently, Lewis spent the 2023 season as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Colorado Boulder. During his time there, he revved up the team’s attack, leading to the Buffaloes averaging 12.75 points and 82.31 yards more per game than the year prior.
Additionally, Lewis also revamped the offense at Kent State, turning the team into a juggernaut that set play, total yards, rushing yards, first downs, and passing yards records. According to Lewis, he’s going to be bringing his magic and skill to the SDSU Aztecs.
“This time is now to support and make Snapdragon Stadium the place to be for Fast, Physical, Fun Aztec Football,” Lewis said in a statement.
Along with hosting the football team, the stadium is also slated to be the home for San Diego’s new MLS team.
