The SDSU Aztecs Are Officially Joining the Pac-12 Conference

The San Diego State University (SDSU) Aztecs have accepted an invitation to join the Pac-12 Conference, the school has announced Thursday.

The Aztecs will officially become a member of the Pac-12 on July 1, 2026. The San Diego football team is joining three other Mountain West schools — Boise State, Colorado State, and Fresno State — in the Pac-12 conference.

The new schools are joining Oregon State and Washington State, which are currently operated as part of Pac-12 as part of a NCAA grace period. Collectively, the six universities will chart additional membership and other conference considerations.

In a news statement Thursday, SDSU Director of Athletics John David Wicker said that the school was “ecstatic” to join the Pac-12 Conference.

“While we are grateful to be a founding member of the Mountain West with 26 years of success in the conference, we are excited at what lies ahead with these new opportunities,” Wicker said. “We will continue to compete for conference championships on the field and to graduate leaders in the community.”

During their time in the Mountain West Conference, the Aztecs have won a record 96 league titles. This includes the most championships in the past three years.

Currently, the SDSU Aztecs are in their Sean Lewis era, as the team recently started the season with the innovative head coach at the helm.
