Here’s Why Cannabis Cafes Might Be Coming to San Diego

Cannabis cafes where you can consume recreational marijuana on-site at a business may soon be coming to San Diego.

On Monday, California officially legalized lounges, cafes, or other businesses where consumers can buy cannabis — and then consume it on the property. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the bill into law.

“Lots of people want to enjoy legal cannabis in the company of others, and many people want to do that while sipping coffee, eating a sandwich or listening to music,” said Matt Haney, a California Assemblymember who sponsored the bill.

The legislation will officially go into effect on Jan. 1, 2025. However, it will still be up to local governments to approve on-site cannabis consumption at businesses within their city limits.

Some municipal governments around California have already got a head start. For example, National City in San Diego County legalized consumption businesses in 2021 despite them being illegal under state law. So, in other words, when the new year rolls around, cannabis cafes in San Diego may be arriving soon after.

According to Assemblymember Haney, these types of cannabis cafes will “bring massive economic, cultural and creative opportunities and benefits” to California.

If you’re looking to hit the ground running with a cannabis cafe in San Diego, there will soon be one dubbed Sessions by the Bay in National City. It’s slated for a December opening just before the new law takes effect.
