Environmentalist Bill McKibben to Speak at UC San Diego in April

Bill McKibben, one of the world’s most prominent environmental voices, is coming to UC San Diego this spring to explore the intersection of climate science and human morality.

Bill McKibben, the author and activist who helped bring the concept of climate change into the global mainstream, will deliver a keynote address in time for Earth Day on Thursday, April 23. The presentation is part of the a lectureship series on religion and science and will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at The Jeannie Auditorium.

McKibben’s lecture, “Climate, Faith, and Collective Responsibility,” arrives at a time of increasing urgency for global sustainability. Organizers with the UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies say the talk will delve into the ethical and spiritual challenges posed by the climate crisis, moving beyond scientific data to address the moral courage required for community action.

Known for his 1989 book “The End of Nature,” the first book on climate change written for a general audience, McKibben has spent decades at the forefront of the environmental movement. He is the founder of 350.org, a grassroots campaign that has spearheaded fossil fuel divestment efforts and shaped ethical conversations regarding planetary protection worldwide.

Joining McKibben on stage will be Marco Werman, the award-winning host of the public radio program “The World.” Werman will moderate a dialogue focusing on how faith, justice, and activism can serve as tools for confronting environmental disruption. The discussion aims to highlight how human solidarity and civic responsibility can shape a more equitable future.

The Burke Lectureship was established to honor Father Eugene Burke and has a long history of bringing distinguished thinkers to La Jolla to discuss religion’s impact on contemporary society.

The event is open to the public, though registration is required.
