The Leopard Sharks Are Here From Now Until December 2021!

August 20, 2021

If you have been looking forward to seeing the leopard sharks in La Jolla this year, now is the time! Like, right now!

Earlier this year, tourists and La Jolla natives were thrilled to welcome birthing seals to the La Jolla shoreline. Now, the friendly, gorgeous leopard sharks vacation at La Jolla Shores from now until December!

Pregnant leopard sharks use the shallow water for much of the same reasons that the seals visit the California shoreline. The watery, calmed terrain offers a safer place to give birth.

Scripps Canyon is an undersea canyon where leopard sharks can keep their embryos, essentially incubating them in warmer, calmer water.

This timeframe is the perfect opportunity for nature lovers to get in the water and take this beautiful opportunity to share the water with these beautiful annual visitors.

An environmental and ocean sciences professor at the University of San Diego, Andrew Nosal, explains that snorkeling with them is likely the most up-close and personal experience you can have with leopard sharks.

So, whether you have never gone swimming with leopard sharks or you try to make it an annual tradition, now is the time to get out there and take the plunge into this exquisite gift from Mother Nature.
