The New Malk Sunset Overlook Might Have the Best View in La Jolla

If you’re looking for the best view of the Pacific Ocean in La Jolla, you may have a hard time competing with the newly opened Malk Sunset Overlook.

The Brian & Nancy Malk Sunset Overlook is located on the campus of the University of California San Diego (UCSD). Complete with viewing platforms, benches, and pathways, the overlook recently opened to the public on July 29.

Brian & Nancy Malk are residents of La Jolla Shores who would frequently drive past the viewing location and notice people gathered on the sidewalk at sunset to take in the view. As such, Brian envisioned an accessible deck where people of all ages and abilities could enjoy the view.

When Brian reached out to UCSD about the idea, the university’s team “enthusiastically embraced” it.

UCSD got to work on the project. After significant planning, design, and construction, work on the Malk Sunset Overlook was completed this month, UCSD announced.

“UC San Diego is a treasured destination that shines brightly on multiple fronts – from groundbreaking research and education to innovative health care and vibrant arts programs – but it’s also a place of breathtaking natural beauty,” said UCSD Chancellor Pradeep Khosla.

The space surrounding the viewing deck features native, drought-tolerant vegetation. Along with plenty of space for people and accessible parking, signage around the site also pays respects to both the land and the original people who settled it – the Kumeyaay Nation.

In a statement, Khosla thanked Nancy and Brian Malk for their “meaningful gift,” and said that the space will allow both campus and community members to “safely and easily enjoy the majestic ocean views that have come to define our university’s spirit.”
