Pier to Cove Swim 2026: Annual Open-Water Tradition Returns to La Jolla Cove in June
Hundreds of swimmers will brave the elements this month as the annual La Jolla (LaJolla.com) tradition of the Pier to Cove Swim returns on June 28, 2026.
The annual 1.5-mile challenge, organized by the La Jolla Cove Swim Club, will kick off at 9 a.m. at the north end of Kellogg Park by the historic Scripps Pier. Participants will navigate the open ocean, tracking southward to cross the finish line at La Jolla Cove.
While online registration for Pier to Cove Swim 2026 has officially sold out at $85, eager participants can still secure a spot via on-site registration for $100 on the morning of the event.
First popularized as a public event roughly 15 years ago when the city granted official permits, the Pier to Cove Swim dates further back through La Jolla Cove Swim Club. The club has fostered a vibrant local community of ocean athletes since the 1970s.
Organizers note that the 1.5-mile course is an open-water event where unpredictable water temperatures and ocean conditions add to the challenge. That means it shouldn’t be a participant’s first open-water swim. Faster swimmers generally complete the course in about 30 minutes, while most finish within an hour.
San Diego Lifeguards will oversee the safety of all participants throughout the morning.
Trophies will be presented to the top overall male and female finishers, alongside medals for individual age groups. However, organizers note that the annual swim remains a fun, community-centric event in which most locals participate for camaraderie rather than competition.
At the finish line, swimmers will be greeted by club volunteers, custom participant swag, and a traditional post-race buffet breakfast provided by Duke’s La Jolla.
