The Legends of Science and Surfing Returns to La Jolla Aug. 14–15
The Legends of Science and Surfing is returning to the shores of San Diego in August, marrying philanthropy, science, and surfing together in a signature La Jolla (LaJolla.com) event.
For those unfamiliar, the event is an annual La Jolla tradition that brings together world-renowned surfers, internationally recognized scientists, and others for an annual science-meetings-surfing celebration that benefits the Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health.
The Legends of Science and Surfing takes place at both Scripps Pier and the nearby UC San Diego campus. This year, the event is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 14 through Saturday, Aug. 15. Some highlights include:
- Legends of Science Oncology Symposium: Kicking off the event on Aug. 14, this symposium invites both industry and academic leaders to discuss breakthroughs in cancer research. This year, the keynote speaker is Kevan M. Shokat, PhD, who led groundbreaking research on targeted therapies for KRAS mutations.
- Legends of Surfing Invitational: On Saturday, Aug. 15, the event moves to Scripps Pier. Spectators can watch legendary surfers from around the world take to the waves in support of cancer research.
- Art & Live Surf Sounds: Attendees will also be able to bid on custom artwork by local surfboard designer and artist Tim Bessell, while La Jolla-based band Seapoodle will provide live surf rock entertainment.
This year will also feature the inaugural presentation of the Legends of Surfing Lifetime Achievement Award. The recipient for the reward is surf icon Gerry Lopez, also known as Mr. Pipeline, for his enduring influence on both local and global surf culture.
