What’s Open or Closed on Juneteenth in La Jolla?

Today marks Juneteenth, which is a federal holiday across the U.S. So what’s closed on Juneteenth in La Jolla this year?

Juneteenth is the celebration of when some of the last enslaved people in the country learned that they were free. Although the holiday started as church picnics, they quickly became a day of remembrance, cookouts, music, and joy at the end of slavery in the U.S.

In 2021, the U.S. government officially recognized Juneteenth as a federal holiday. Because of that, the holiday means that many normal services or businesses may be closed.

• Most private businesses remain open on Juneteenth. So, in downtown La Jolla, many retailers and storefronts will be open. It’s always a good idea to call ahead and confirm, however.
• All San Diego County and San Diego City facilities will be closed on June 19, which means that the La Jolla Riford Library won’t be open.
• Since La Jolla is in San Diego, you won’t need to renew those parking meters. All parking meters, time restrictions, and yellow zones are not enforced on Juneteenth.
• The U.S. Postal Service will not conduct mail deliveries in La Jolla on June 19. Additionally, post office locations will be closed.
• Most museums in La Jolla should remain open, but there are exceptions. The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, for example, is closed. So, call to confirm.
• All state, county, city, and federal offices in La Jolla will be closed in commemoration of the Juneteenth holiday.

Most Juneteenth celebrations happen on the third Saturday of the month, but if you want to celebrate Juneteenth, the annual Juneteenth at Chollas Lake celebration will include music, dance, poetry, food, and more from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 22.
