La Jolla Surf: Learn About the Culture, Art & Craft of Local Surfing

Surfing is a favorite pastime of many San Diegans, and a new exhibit dubbed La Jolla Surf explores the local culture and history of the sport.

La Jolla Surf is a new exhibition scheduled to run at the La Jolla Historical Society, one of the top museums in La Jolla, from Feb. 8 through May 25. Through film, art, and photography, the exhibit promises to introduce audiences to “a few of the ocean lovers, oddballs, outcasts, poets and geniuses” who have surfed in La Jolla waters.

The exhibition will include a film specifically made by La Jolla Surf curator John Durant. The film features extensive and original interview footage with local surfers, and will offer attendees insights into how the surfing community in San Diego developed and evolved over time.

Along with the film, La Jolla Surf also invites audiences to step into the past through iconic surf photography snapped by Roy Porello, Jeff Divine, and Ron Church, as well as original artwork from award-winning designer John van Hamersveld.

Of course, the surfing exhibit wouldn’t be complete without displays of iconic surfboards crafted by some of the best board shapers in the San Diego region.

The exhibition will kick off with an opening reception on Friday, Feb. 7 in the Wisteria Cottage Gallery.

From 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., members will be able to get an exclusive preview of La Jolla Surf, while the public can attend the general reception from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Music will be provided by PAR AVION, and refreshments will be served.
