Harland Threads: How This Small Business is Redefining Women’s Golf Apparel
Harland Threads is a San Diego-based company that is redefining what stylish, functional, and unique golf apparel for women can look like.
Whether you’re new to golfing or you’re a veteran on the green, Harland Threads creates timeless pieces with a modern twist that will take you from “that first swing to that first birdie.”
The Founding of Harland Threads
Harland Threads is the brainchild of Taylor Phelps, a Chicago native who, when she moved to San Diego, noticed a very popular attraction across the street from her apartment in Pacific Beach.
“I lived across from Mission Bay Golf course,” she said. “Late at night, early in the morning — I just saw people there 24/7.”
Eventually, the sport caught her attention. She began taking lessons, and eventually acquired her own set of clubs. However, there was one thing about the sport that just wasn’t up to par: the apparel.
“I bought golf clothes, and they were so expensive and not flattering,” Phelps said. “It wasn’t for me.”
Phelps saw a gap in the market for women’s golf apparel that was both functional and flattering. When it didn’t seem to exist at the time, Phelps saw an opportunity. “I was like, ‘Oh, I’ll make my own.’”
From finding eco-friendly manufacturing partners to actually designing the pieces, it took Phelps about a year to get the ball rolling. This past June, however, Harland Threads launched with its first collection.
What Sets Harland Threads Apart
According to Phelps, much of the golf apparel industry was focused on plain, overly tight clothing that was unaesthetic and restricted movement on the range. Enter Harland Threads.
The gold apparel company makes vintage-inspired golf clothing — such as polo shirts and skirts — that feature four-way stretch material, breathable and buttery soft fabric, and long-lasting durability. More than that, the sets also feature UPF+ Sun Protection, and are completely up to country club dress code standards. Phelps is also planning to launch dresses, pants, quarter zips and golfing accessories and the brand continues to grow.
Currently, Harland Threads has two distinct collections available: The Palermo Collection and The Loma Club both inspired by golf courses the collections photoshoots took place.
- The Palermo Collection: Inspired by Sicilian golf culture, this collection thoroughly represents Harland Threads’ mixture of bold and timeless styling.
- The Loma Collection: Named after one of San Diego’s most iconic golf courses, The Loma Club highlights the local community — and emphasizes the laid-back Southern California lifestyle.
Another thing that sets Harland Threads apart is the focus on community. Phelps said that, as a woman relatively new to golf, she is committed to inspiring the next generation of young female golfers.
To that end, Phelps has collaborated with local golf girl groups to organize and promote events at local driving ranges and golf courses, including through giveaways, one-on-one time with an instructor, or other promotions.
“I’m trying to support girls or women getting into golf,” she said. “Not a single one of my girlfriends had a set of clubs, and now, five of them do.”

Taylor’s Top Tips for Golfers (And Her Favorite Courses)
If you’re new to golf and intimidated by the sport, Phelps provided some solid tips for newer golfers. Here are Taylor’s top tips for beginners to the sport.
- Play to Your Strengths – Stick with clubs and shots you feel most confident with. A wedge is the perfect beginner club if you are just starting out.
- Focus on Your Grip – A relaxed, neutral grip gives you better control and consistency. I always think of holding a baby bird – don’t squeeze the club too tight!
- Eyes on the Ball – Avoid peeking too early; stay focused on the ball through impact (P.S if you put a leaf in front of your ball and focus on that when you swing, it will help)
- Don’t Overthink It – One bad shot won’t ruin your round. Take a breath, play your favorite song, reset, and focus on the next swing—it’s always a fresh start.
- Find Your Crew – Golf is better with friends. Join a group, hit the course, and most importantly, have fun!
Of course, getting into golf really boils down to actually spending time on the course. If you’re interested in kicking off your golf adventure, Taylor’s favorite local courses in San Diego include Torrey Pines Golf Course, The Loma Club in Liberty Station, and both the Riverwalk and Coronado courses.
