Pregnant leopard sharks use the shallow water for much of the same reasons that the seals visit the California shoreline. The watery, calmed terrain offers a safer place to give birth.
Scripps Canyon is an undersea canyon where leopard sharks can keep their embryos, essentially incubating them in warmer, calmer water.
This timeframe is the perfect opportunity for nature lovers to get in the water and take this beautiful opportunity to share the water with these beautiful annual visitors.
An environmental and ocean sciences professor at the University of San Diego, Andrew Nosal, explains that snorkeling with them is likely the most up-close and personal experience you can have with leopard sharks.
