Juneteenth at the Beach: Celebrate Freedom and Community with Paddle for Peace in La Jolla
Mark your calendars: on June 20, the 6th annual Juneteenth at the Beach celebration will bring music, art, community, and good vibes to La Jolla.
Juneteenth, which became a federally recognized holiday in 2021, is a celebration of when some of the last enslaved people in the country learned that they were free. To commemorate the day in a thoroughly San Diego fashion, local nonprofit Paddle for Peace is hosting its 6th annual Juneteenth at the Beach at La Jolla Shores.
The event is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 20. It promises to be a sun-soaked day filled with delicious barbecue, beach games, music, and good vibes for the entire family. Activities on the schedule include:
- Group runs and movement sessions
- Free surf lessons lead by Paddle for Peace
- Community paddle out and surf sessions
- Music by DJ Birdy
- A fashion show hosted by Rising Tides
- A beach volleyball tournament
- Kids corner with all-ages activities
- A beach cleanup
- And more
The event is free to attend and open to anyone, but the free surf lessons require advance registration. Additionally, a meal ticket is required for the community BBQ.
