Start the New Year With a Splash at the La Jolla Polar Bear Plunge

If you’re looking for one of the most refreshing ways to start 2026, then look no further than the La Jolla Polar Bear Plunge on New Year’s Day.

Polar bear plunges are a popular New Year’s activity across the world. Essentially, it involves a quick dip into chilly waters right in the middle of winter. On Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, hundreds of residents and visitors will take brave the cold waters at La Jolla Shores.

How cold? Although San Diego weather in January is generally mild near the coast, the average ocean temperature can range from 55 degrees to 62 degrees.

As such, the organizers of the event, the La Jolla Swim Club, note that participants who aren’t used to cold water should keep their swims short and safe. Additionally, the Swim Club notes that participants should know their limits and only swim in areas monitored by lifeguards.

The New Year’s Day Polar Bear Plunge kicks off at 9 a.m. on Jan. 1 with setup and a social hour. A group photo will be taken at 10 a.m., which is also when the plunge will begin.

To help participants warm up, there will also be warm beverages and a potluck at Kellogg Park. Bring a pot of chili, hot soup, a favorite warm dish, or a dessert for the post-swim potluck feast. Coffee will be provided.

While often done as a long-standing community tradition, polar bear plunges are a way to embody San Diego’s wellness vibes. Research shows that cold water immersion can have a number of benefits, including mood benefits and reduced pain and inflammation.

This isn’t an organized event, and RSVPs aren’t required for the La Jolla Polar Bear Plunge. As far as dress code, you can wear anything you’d like to help brave the frigid waters — from wetsuits to fins, or even tuxedos. For more information, visit this link.
