Calif. Officials Mulling La Jolla Cove Closure

Seals at La Jolla Cove

The California Coastal Commission is considering a partial and temporary closure of La Jolla Cove amid unruliness and continued harassment of the native sea lions there, SF Gate reports. The discussions come just one day after an 18-year-old pleaded guilty in federal court to repeatedly kicking a La Jolla sea lion.

The sea lions are a federally protected species, but over the years, interactions between them and visitors have continued to stir controversy. As a result, the Coastal Commission said it is considering taking action to implement further protections, which may include limits on beach access in the area where the sea lions congregate.
